Champions Trophy: Landmark Kohli century leaves India in control and Pakistan on brink

Pakistan could soon crash out of the Champions Trophy after Virat Kohli's unbeaten century inspired India to two wins from as many games.

Virat Kohli's landmark unbeaten century moved India within touching distance of the Champions Trophy last four as a dominant six-wicket victory left Pakistan on the brink of elimination.

India star Kohli dominated with a 111-ball ton, hitting his final delivery for four to reach three figures and see his side to their 242-run target with more than seven overs to spare on Sunday.

Kohli's 51st century in the format also saw him become the fastest batter to reach 14,000 ODI runs, getting there in his 287th innings and taking the record from fellow great Sachin Tendulkar, who took 350.

Shubman Gill had earlier posted 46, along with 56 from Shreyas Iyer, as India breezed to two wins from as many games, leaving them comfortably top of Group A after a crushing victory in Dubai.

India's spinners dominated as Pakistan collapsed to 241 all out, with Kuldeep Yadav's 3-40 the starring feature of an impressive bowling performance.

All-rounder Hardik Pandya claimed two key wickets, too, dismissing Babar Azam for 23 before removing Saud Shakeel as his stand of 62 threatened to get Pakistan going.

Axar Patel chipped in with the crucial dismissal of Mohammad Rizwan, removing the opposition captain for 46 as Pakistan collapsed from a promising 151-2 to an underwhelming total.

Shaheen Shah Afridi claimed captain Rohit Sharma for 20 and Hardik on just eight, though the damage was done on either side of those wickets after Gill and Iyer picked up the mantle alongside Kohli.

Axar then stood to one side, finishing unbeaten on three as he left the strike for India's hero Kohli, who carved Khushdil Shah through extra cover to seal the win and a fitting personal milestone.

The defeat leaves co-hosts Pakistan on the brink of another embarrassing exit, with their elimination confirmed should New Zealand overcome Bangladesh on Monday.

Data Debrief: Chasing delight continues for India

India have now won each of their last seven ODIs in ICC events when batting second. Their last loss while chasing in such events came against New Zealand in the semi-finals of the Cricket World Cup 2019.

This win may have come as no surprise, however, considering India are unbeaten in their last eight 50-over clashes at Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

That is their highest tally at any venue without losing, surpassing the seven at Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore, and further joy in Dubai saw Pakistan's struggles against their fierce rivals continue.

Indeed, Pakistan have lost eight of their last nine ODI matches with India, their only win coming in the Champions Trophy final in 2017, though this defeat means their title defence all but ended here.
