Cavaliers reportedly bringing back Atkinson as coach
After rumours swirled the Cavs would fire their coach after being swept in the East finals, Atkinson will remain at the helm in Cleveland.
Kenny Atkinson will in fact remain the coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
It was rumoured that Atkinson's job was in jeopardy after the Cavaliers were swept by the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference finals, but he'll return to coach the team for a third season in 2026-27, according to multiple reports on Tuesday.
The entire front office and coaching staff will also be retained.
In 2025-26, Cleveland won 12 fewer games than it did in Atkinson's first year in 2024-25, when the Cavs went 64-18 and captured the Central Division crown and top seed in the East.
Although there was a drop-off in the regular season, the Cavaliers stepped up in the play-offs, knocking off the Toronto Raptors in the first round and upsetting the top-seeded Detroit Pistons in the semi-finals to reach the conference finals for the first time since 2018.
However, with a trip to the NBA Finals on the line, very little then went right for Cleveland.
The Cavs blew a 22-point, fourth quarter lead before losing Game 1 in overtime, and were ultimately ousted with an embarrassing 130-93 thrashing on Monday, losing the four games to the Knicks by an average of 19.3 points.
Despite an ugly showing, star guard Donovan Mitchell endorsed Atkinson as coach, and management apparently agrees.
