Brook admits lying about nightclub incident to protect England team-mates

Harry Brook was fined and warned over an incident at a Wellington nightclub, but he has now admitted other England players were present.

England white-ball captain Harry Brook has admitted he lied to cover for some of his team-mates after getting involved in an altercation with a bouncer in New Zealand in October.

On the evening before an ODI defeat to the Black Caps on November 1, Brook was involved in an incident outside a nightclub in Wellington.

He was fined the maximum £30,000 and warned about his off-field conduct, and it is thought he was almost stripped of his country's ODI and T20I captaincies.

Brook initially said he was alone at the time of the incident, but he has backtracked on that claim after The Telegraph reported that Jacob Bethell and Josh Tongue could be investigated over their possible involvement.

In a statement issued after Friday's T20I victory over Sri Lanka, Brook apologised for attempting to cover up his team-mates' involvement and pledged to learn from the saga.

"I accept responsibility for my actions in Wellington and acknowledge others were present that evening," said Brook.

"I regret my previous comments and my intention was to protect my team-mates from being drawn into a situation that arose as a result of my own decisions.

"I have apologised and will continue to reflect on the matter. This has been a challenging period in my career, but one from which I am learning.

"I recognise I have more to learn regarding the off-field responsibilities that come with leadership and captaincy.

"I remain committed to developing in this area and to improving both personally and professionally."

England and Sri Lanka will face off in the second T20I on Sunday, with the three-match series drawing to a close on Tuesday.
