Borthwick hopeful that more is to come for England after Australia win

Steve Borthwick hopes his England side have more gears to reach, after they cruised to a 25-7 win over Australia.

Steve Borthwick lauded England's development as they began their Autumn Nations Series with a 25-7 win over Australia at the Allianz Stadium.

Harry Potter's breakaway try had given the visitors hope as they entered half-time just three points adrift of England at 10-7 behind.

But it was complete control for Borthwick's men in the second half, with tries from Henry Pollock, Alex Mitchell and Luke Cowan-Dick sealing an eighth straight victory.

Borthwick was satisfied with the display and winning start to the series, though he expects more improvements to be made once he works with the side for a longer period of time.

"In the first half, we were a bit too eager and forced a pass in those positions," he said. "For a week's preparation, that is to be expected and, as the team grows, we will get better.

"I am really pleased for our supporters to be back here at the Allianz Stadium and to get the win for them in these difficult conditions, with the greasy ball and pitch."

Borthwick also singled out Pollock for praise, with his try on the hour mark giving the hosts a decisive lead.

Pollock has become one of the leading talents for England, with the 20-year-old touring with the British and Irish Lions in the summer, after performing consistently for Northampton Saints.

"I think everybody's excited by when [Henry] Pollock gets on the pitch, what he brings, I think there's no doubt about that," Borthwick added.

"I think he's probably the most excited person. I think the way he is and the energy he brings, he's a ball of energy and I love having that character in the squad.

"I think we've got a great blend of personalities developing within the team, and from the senior leadership group. I think [they] have done a great job this week."

Fly-half George Ford, who had been handed a start by Borthwick after playing a pivotal role during the successful tour in the summer, praised the team for their overall domination and strength in depth.

"I am obviously delighted with the result in the end," he added. "It was a tricky game for a number of reasons. The first game brings challenges, the weather and going against a well-trained team.

"When you are dominant and the scoreboard doesn't reflect that, you feel like you have to go chasing for points, but we just wanted to build pressure.

"We know that, with our set-piece and the lads coming off the bench, they were going to add some impetus."
