Breanna Stewart admitted, "It's the story of our season", as the New York Liberty fell to a 66-58 loss on the road to the expansion Golden State Valkyries on Tuesday.

Despite the defeat, and it being the Liberty's fourth opportunity to tie down a playoff spot, they were able to rely on a Phoenix Mercury victory over the Indiana Fever to land a postseason berth.

The defending champions have now lost four of their last six games and, at 24-17, continue to search for form in what has been an inconsistent campaign compared to last year's title-winning run.

Following a competitive first quarter, where the Liberty led by four points, New York endured a disastrous second period, as they were outscored 26-8, having committed five turnovers, and missed 83% of their shots from beyond the arc.

While the Liberty managed to bridge the gap in the fourth quarter, having trailed by 14 points at halftime, Sandy Brondello's side left it too late to mount a comeback.

"This has been disappointing, collectively," Stewart said.

"Yeah, there can be bright spots or whatever, but we have three games left, and we're not where we need to be. It's frustrating, it's tough.

"It's the story of our season right now. When we’re taking the ball out of the net, everything becomes harder. We dig ourselves holes, miss open chances, and our spacing breaks down. It's frustrating."
