The Memphis Grizzlies will be without Scotty Pippen Jr. to start the season after the team announced the fourth-year guard will undergo a sesamoidectomy to address ongoing discomfort in his left big toe.

The team said a timeline for Pippen’s return will be provided following the procedure.

The son of Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen went undrafted in 2022 before signing with the Los Angeles Lakers for one season and joining Memphis in January 2024.

Pippen Jr. appeared in only 27 games over his first two NBA seasons before getting more opportunities with the Grizzlies last season, playing in 79 contests and averaging 9.9 points, 4.4 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals.

He was one of 16 players in the league to record at least 100 steals.

Pippen was strong down the stretch last season, averaging 14.9 points, 4.6 assists and 4.0 rebounds over his last 16 appearances – including eighth-seeded Memphis’ four-game sweep in the first-round of the play-offs by the eventual NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Grizzlies open the 2025-26 campaign on Wednesday against the New Orleans Pelicans.
