Basketball Hall of Famer Wilkens dies at 88
Wilkens, who is the all-time leader in NBA games coached and an inductee into the Basketball Hall of Fame as a player and coach, has died.
Lenny Wilkens, who is recognised as one of the NBA's all-time greatest players and coaches, died Sunday at 88.
A nine-time All-Star as a player, Wilkens was later the first coach to win 1,000 games and was voted into the Basketball Hall of Fame as both a player and coach.
His 1,332 coaching wins at the time of his retirement in 2004-05 were the most at that time, and his 2,487 games coached are still a record.
He coached the Seattle SuperSonics to the NBA title in 1979 and was named the 1994 NBA coach of the year with the Atlanta Hawks.
He also coached the Portland Trail Blazers, Cleveland Cavaliers and Toronto Raptors.
"Lenny Wilkens represented the very best of the NBA - as a Hall of Fame player, Hall of Fame coach, and one of the game's most respected ambassadors," NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. "So much so that, four years ago, Lenny received the unique distinction of being named one of the league’s 75 greatest players and 15 greatest coaches of all time."
