Australia's Starc announces T20I retirement
Mitchell Starc has called time on his T20I career with an eye to focusing on the longer formats for Australia from next year.
Mitchell Starc has announced his retirement from T20Is in order to focus on Australia's Test schedule and the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Since making his T20I debut in 2012, Starc has made 65 such appearances for Australia, taking 79 wickets, with his best figures of 4-20 coming against West Indies in 2022.
Only Adam Zampa (130) has taken more wickets for Australia in the format than Starc.
The 35-year-old was part of the 2021 T20 World Cup-winning side, taking nine wickets in seven matches on the way to the trophy.
However, he has not featured in T20Is since the 2024 World Cup, and he is now setting his sights on prolonging his career.
From mid-2026, Australia face a heavy Test schedule, which includes a tour of South Africa, a five-match series in India in early 2027, the one-off 150th anniversary match against England and an away Ashes series in the middle of that year.
The ODI World Cup will then be held in October and November 2027, taking place in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, with Australia looking to defend their title.
"Test cricket is and has always been my highest priority," Starc said.
"I have loved every minute of every T20 game I have played for Australia, particularly the 2021 World Cup, not just because we won, but the incredible group and the fun along the way.
"Looking ahead to an away Indian Test tour, the Ashes and an ODI World Cup in 2027, I feel this is my best way forward to remain fresh, fit and at my best for those campaigns.
"It also gives the bowling group time to prepare for the T20 World Cup in the matches leading into that tournament."
