Australian Open: Rybakina targeting world number one ranking after Melbourne success

Elena Rybakina emerged victorious in the 2026 Australian Open final against Aryna Sabalenka, and has now set her sights on another goal.

Elena Rybakina said she has her sights set on "big goals" like becoming the world number one, after her victory at the Australian Open.

The Kazakh defeated current world number one Aryna Sabalenka 6-4 4-6 6-4 in Saturday’s showpiece in Melbourne, clinching her second grand slam title after victory at Wimbledon in 2022.

Rybakina is the sixth player in the Open Era to win her first two women's singles majors on hard and grass court, after Amelie Mauresmo, Lindsay Davenport, Maria Sharapova, Martina Hingis and Venus Williams.

The 2025 WTA Finals champion also knocked out second seed Iga Swiatek and world number five Jessica Pegula on her way to glory.

Rybakina is the first player to claim the women's singles title at the Australian Open after defeating three top-six ranked players, since Maria Sharapova in 2008.

"I have big goals. Of course, time will show," said Rybakina when asked if she wants to become world number one.

"But definitely, we will keep on working. Hopefully, I achieve my goals. I'm going to keep on working and let's see what's going to happen."

Rybakina is now the player with the highest winning percentage against players ranked world number one since the WTA Rankings were first published in 1975 (60%, minimum 10 meetings).

And since the WTA Rankings were published, only Serena Williams (eight times) and Venus Williams (four) have defeated both world number one and two at a single WTA event more often than Rybakina (three).

After losing the Melbourne final to Sabalenka three years ago, Rybakina explained how she came out on top this time around.

"It's an incredible achievement. [I'm] super happy and proud. It was a really tough battle," she added.

"I didn't expect to turn it around. Got some opportunities. Aryna is a very tough opponent, but I'm super happy this time, I'm holding the trophy.

"Last time, I was close, but Aryna played really well in that match. She stepped in, she went for her shots, she was serving really well. She was even risking a little bit because the second serve was going as the first.

"I knew even today if I get a chance to lead, I will need to try some risky shots and just go for it; not wait for any mistakes or even get to the long rallies. It's great and it's amazing to hold this trophy this time."
