ATP Finals: Sinner overcomes injured Auger-Aliassime in Turin opener

Jannik Sinner made the perfect start to his ATP Finals title tilt after downing Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets on Monday.

Jannik Sinner opened his ATP Finals campaign with a victory as he downed an injured Felix Auger-Aliassime in Turin on Monday.

In what was a rematch of their championship match at the Paris Masters eight days ago, the same result transpired as Sinner emerged a 7-5 6-1 victor.

The pair renewed their rivalry early in the first set and exchanged blows, with Sinner the first to create a break opportunity, but Auger-Aliassime defended both those points.

Auger-Aliassime was again on the back foot and denied Sinner on set point, but he was unable to withstand the wave of pressure as the Italian broke through in the 12th game.

But Auger-Aliassime appeared to be struggling with an injury to his left leg and required a medical timeout at the end of the first set, and he was unable to recover from there.

Sinner reeled off the opening three games with little fuss before Auger-Aliassime got himself on the board, but the second seed quickly regained his composure to progress.

Over the final three games, Sinner lost just four points as he got himself up and running at the year-end tournament with a fierce ace that sailed past his opponent.

Data Debrief: Sinner makes himself at home

Sinner was backed by a raucous crowd in Turin for his opening match at the ATP Finals, and he certainly delivered as he seeks a first title triumph at the tournament.

Indeed, his one-hour and 41-minute victory means Sinner has now won his last 27 matches on indoor courts, while he has not dropped a set at the ATP Finals since his 2023 final defeat to Novak Djokovic.

The highest of any currently active player, Sinner (84.6%, 11-2) now only trails Ilie Nastase (88.0%, 22-3) for win rate at the ATP Finals, since the event's inauguration in 1970 – minimum 10 matches.
