ATP Finals: Sinner advances to last four with straight-sets win over Zverev

Defending ATP Finals champion Jannik Sinner is into the last four again, having eased past Alexander Zverev on Wednesday.

Jannik Sinner booked his place in the last four of the ATP Finals with a 6-4 6-3 victory over Alexander Zverev, who now needs to beat Felix Auger-Aliassime to advance.

Zverev posed Sinner more problems than Auger-Aliassime did in their opening game in the Bjorn Borg Group – a 7-5 6-1 win for the Italian – but the four-time major champion still triumphed in straight sets within one hour and 48 minutes.

Sinner had to survive some early pressure, saving two break points with the help of two aces, with the first nine games going on serve.

But Zverev was unable to force a tie-break at 5-4 down, with some passive play being met with excellent movement to the net by Sinner, who got the all-important break.

Two more searing aces from Sinner helped him kickstart the second set with a hold, and Zverev then failed to take advantage of three break points when next on return.

Sinner's break arrived in game six off the back of a brilliantly disguised drop shot, and after saving another break point in game seven, the Wimbledon and Australian Open champion was able to serve it out in comfort.

Sinner is now assured of a place in the semi-finals ahead of his last round-robin match, against Ben Shelton, who needs a win to have a chance of qualifying.

Should Shelton lose, Zverev's meeting with Auger-Aliassime is now essentially a shoot-out for a last-four place.

Data Debrief: Sinner matches Federer, Djokovic and Wawrinka

Sinner is now just the fourth player to reach three or more consecutive semi-finals at the ATP Finals this century, along with Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka.

And after another straight-sets win, he is targeting a sweep of the round-robin stage.

No player has achieved that feat without a dropping a set at back-to-back editions since the event's inauguration in 1970, and Sinner did so in 2024.

Sinner's record against fellow top-10 players in 2025 now stands at 16-4, with all four of his defeats coming against Carlos Alcaraz – who remains a possible final opponent.
