Carlos Alcaraz needed almost three hours, but he eventually got over the line against Taylor Fritz at the ATP Finals.

Alcaraz came from behind to prevail 6-7 (2-7) 7-5 6-3 over the American in Turin on Tuesday.

Fritz, who finished runner-up to Jannik Sinner last year, was in the hunt for his second indoor win over Alcaraz this season.

At one stage in the second set, Alcaraz had to fend off two break points during a 14-minute game, which he eventually won to hold serve.

Alcaraz's crucial break came when he was 6-5 up in the second, forcing the decider, in which the momentum shifted firmly in the Spaniard's favour.

The 22-year-old saw three match points go by the wayside as Fritz held on valiantly, but Alcaraz got the job done with a brutal love to hold, and his progression to the semi-finals will be sealed should Alex de Minaur beat Lorenzo Musetti later on.

Alcaraz has claimed a 50th career ATP top 10 win in 73 matches – since 1973, only Jimmy Connors (69) and Boris Becker (71) have claimed 50 career ATP top 10 wins in fewer matches.

He is the third-youngest player to achieve 50 wins over opponents ranked inside the top 10.

Alcaraz is now also within 50 points of securing the year-end number one spot, while he is the youngest player to reach multiple semi-finals at the ATP Finals since Rafael Nadal (21 years 162 days) in 2007.
