Al-Khaleej 1-4 Al-Ahli: Goncalves shines in end-of-season thrashing

Al-Ahli had already secured third spot in the Saudi Pro League, but they ended their season on a high by putting Al-Khaleej to the sword.

Al-Ahli ended their Saudi Pro League season with a flourish as Matheus Goncalves played a starring role during their 4-1 rout against Al-Khaleej on Wednesday.

Rayan Hamed, Feras Al Brikan and an Ali Al Salem own goal had put Al-Ahli in control before Goncalves' fine finish sealed a routine victory at Prince Mohamed bin Fahd Stadium.

The hosts needed just eight minutes to take the lead when a short corner routine picked out Ivan Toney, who laid the ball back for Hamed to tuck home despite Anthony Moris' best efforts, with the goal eventually given after a lengthy VAR review for offside.

But Al-Khaleej hit back nine minutes later through Giorgos Masouras, with the Greek forward on hand to turn Saleh Al Amri's inviting cross into the area beyond Edouard Mendy.

However, Matthias Jaissle's side restored their advantage in the 34th minute when a quick free-kick saw Saleh Abu Al Shamat slip Feras Al Brikan in behind the Al-Khaleej defence before he calmly finished into the net.

And Al-Ahli put themselves in further control five minutes after the restart when Al-Khaleej substitute Al Salem headed into his own net following Goncalves' mazy run.

Toney and Goncalves then spurned two huge opportunities to put the result beyond doubt, the latter somehow firing straight at Moris after being teed up brilliantly by Enzo Millot.

But Goncalves was able to add further gloss to the scoreline 12 minutes from time when his teasing delivery into the box evaded everyone and nestled into the bottom-left corner.

Data Debrief: Goncalves leads the way for away-day specialists

Though just coming up short in the title race, Al-Ahli can look back on a strong league campaign, and it was Goncalves who took centre stage here. He finished with team-high totals for chances created (three), passes in the final third (19), successful dribbles (three) and touches in the opposition box (eight).

Al‑Ahli have also now not lost any of their Pro League matches against Al‑Khaleej (W8 D4), their longest unbeaten run against a single opponent in the competition. They have also scored in every meeting, with only Al‑Hazem (16) seeing longer 100% scoring runs.

The result also saw them record their 11th away league win of 2025-26, equalling their highest total in a single Pro League campaign. They also took their goal tally for the season to 71, surpassing their previous high in a single term, which was 69 in 2024-25.

And they were deserving of their win, too. Al-Ahli finished with an expected goals (xG) total of 2.05 from their 13 shots, seven of which were on target, compared to Al-Khaleej's tally of 0.84 from their nine attempts.
