Daryl Morey will not return as the Philadelphia 76ers’ president of basketball operations, but head coach Nick Nurse will be back next season, multiple media outlets reported on Tuesday.  

The organisation later appeared to confirm the leadership change by posting a picture of Morey on social media with the caption, “thank you, @dmorey.”

Managing partner Josh Harris released a statement saying the team has “fallen well short of our own expectations.”

The news of Morey’s dismissal came two days after the 76ers were eliminated from the playoffs at the hands of the New York Knicks in a second-round sweep.

Morey was Philadelphia’s top basketball decision-maker for six seasons, with the team going 270-212 in that stretch. His Philly teams made five playoff appearances and won four playoff series but never advanced past the second round.

Former Golden State Warriors executive Bob Myers will lead the 76ers’ search for their next president of basketball operations.

Morey’s decision-making while in Philly was proven to produce mixed results. The team their star backcourt duo of Tyrese Maxey and V.J. Edgecombe while under his leadership, and the 76ers beat the rival Boston Celtics in a first-round playoff series this season.

But Morey also gave massive extensions to Joel Embiid and Paul George, whose injury frequency made the deals virtually untradable.

Morey also traded former first-round pick Jared McCain to the Oklahoma City Thunder this season, and McCain has become a valued rotation player for a Thunder team that is 8-0 in the postseason so far.
