T20 World Cup: Australia end disappointing campaign with nine-wicket win over Oman

After already being knocked out of the T20 World Cup, Australia made sure to leave on a high note as they thrashed Oman in Pallekele.

Australia closed out their T20 World Cup campaign with a comfortable nine-wicket victory over Oman in Pallekele.

After winning the toss, Australia bowled Oman out for just 104 before captain Mitchell Marsh's unbeaten 64 off 33 helped them chase down the target in just 9.4 overs.

It was a perfect start with the ball for Australia as Xavier Bartlett (2-27) sent the stumps flying with his first delivery to Aamir Kaleem (0).

Adam Zampa (4-21) then ripped through the Oman batting lineup, with Glenn Maxwell (2-13) also enjoying the spin-friendly conditions in Sri Lanka.

Marsh wasted no time with the bat, hitting seven boundaries and four maximums for his 64, while Travis Head made 32 off 19 before being caught and bowled by Shakeel Ahmad (1-29).

Nevertheless, Josh Inglis (12no) came in and got the job done, clinching victory with a straight drive back over the bowler's head for four.

Data Debrief: Zampa leaves his mark

Australia left it too little too late to show their strengths in the shortest format, but they left with some records next to their name.

This run chase was the joint-fastest of a target of over 100 at the men's T20 World Cup (9.4 overs), level with England's chase of 117 against the United States in 2024.

Zampa's four wickets also saw him move up to second for most scalps in the competition's history (44), while he now holds the record for most four-wicket hauls in the tournament (four).

Australia have now won all eight of their matches against current associate member nations in men’s T20Is, winning by at least five wickets or 50 runs in seven of those eight fixtures.
